Local charity to benefit from the London Mela

August 06

HILLINGDON Autistic Care and

Support will be one of the charities to benefit from this year's London Mela on Sunday.

The charity works with health, education and social services to enhance the range of quality of services available to parents and carers of adults and children with autistic spectrum disorder.

The Mela, in Gunnersbury Park, Ealing, will also benefit the Sickle Cell Society, Muscular Dystrophy and St Luke's Hospice in Kenton.

Sponsor Barclays Bank will match the amount raised.

Martin Akers, regional director for Barclays, said: "I hope thousands of people will visit us on the day to take part in our fundraising activities and help us to beat the £3,000 we received last year".

Visitors to the event can also nominate a local charity to receive £1,000. The winner will be picked out at random and the person who put it forward will win a hamper.

At the Mela, Hillingdon's Grange Park Infants' School will be hosting the Kaleidoscope Project, a collaboration with the Emergency Exit Arts, inspired by the art of Rangoli.

Radio 1 DJs Bobby and Nihal will also be presenting the best in British Asian urban music and Pakistani rocker Atif Aslam will be making his European debut.

Other attractions will include Classic Mela, specially commissioned street theatre, Bollywood-inspired salsa dancing and a funfair.

London-born singer, song-writer and producer Ajay, 27, who has worked alongside artists such as Jamiroquai, the Brand New Heavies, Gregory Issacs and Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan, will be performing with an eight-piece band.

He told the Hillingdon Times that he thought the Mela was important for two reasons.

He said: "One, it supports Asian cultural traditions and brings the community together.

"It's also a invitation for non-Asians to experience Asian culture which I think is the most important part.

"London Mela is great, a one-stop-shop for British Asian Culture"

Ajay will also be taking his turn as goalie in a charity penalty shoot-out and expects to be mainly picking the ball out of the back of the net from 2.15pm to 3.30pm.
