The Nottingham Mela is considered to be one of the most innovative events of its kind in the whole county, with artistic excellence and participation at the heart of its aims. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm and caters for all age groups – in addition to the main stage line-up of local and top artists, we have an artist marquee, promoting traditional and contemporary arts and workshops, information stalls, fun fair rides, numerous stalls selling delicious and aromatic Asian foods and fantastic range of Asian clothes and jewellery. Another aspect that makes Nottingham Mela unique is that it is delivered by two of the UK’s premier arts organisations, assisted by the Mela Support Group with volunteers who have a keen interest in promoting Asian arts. The skills and experience all help to compile an event to cater for everyone’s needs.
Nottingham Mela draws people from all communities, all age groups and from around the country. It is a fun day that unites communities and celebrates diversity.
This is very fitting for a City that delivered the very first national Mela way back in 1988, organised by a dedicated group of volunteers within APNA Arts. The new Nottingham Mela was formed in 2004 by APNA Arts and Nottingham Asian Arts Council.
Note: APNA Arts has now merged with EMACA to form the New Art Exchange – a flagship £6million culturally diverse capital project.
